est. $4,000-7,000 (one of four to be sold)
A fully rigged three-masted scale model built by veteran modelmaker Wayne Masters in 1993 as a special commission for Peter Pickles, late of Sydney. Built using Black Bean and Tasmanian Oak, and using the traditional ship building technique of plank and frame construction, The Bounty is fully fitted with internal decks and bulkheads, and displays superb attention to the fine details, with all masts, blocks and tackles handmade. The construction utilised a copy of the original ship’s plans, acquired from the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. According to the maker,“it took months, years to build. I never keep track of the actual hours.” |
Also in this sale, a fine collection of late 18th Century jewellery, the owner being a direct descendant of the Bonaparte family via King Louis Bonaparte of Holland, brother of Napoleon I and father of Emperor Napoleon III. Louis Bonaparte married Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of Empress Josephine Bonaparte. The family collection has existed for over 200 years and includes jewellery, art and personal items belonging to the Bonaparte family spanning the period leading up to the French Revolution until 1873. It was kept away from public view in a private collection in the family chateau in France for most of the 20th century.
Other highlights include a large group of original Norman Lindsay etchings and sketches from the collection of the Late Norman Hetherington OAM, cartoonist at the Bulletin, creator of Mr Squiggle. The collection also includes other Australian early 20th C cartoons and etchings.
